May 10

Two races up for this weekend - this is both bad and good. Same day and time = BAD ...............Good = Muncie running community has two great races to pick from.

Ran on the best 5K course in the Muncie Community, The 11th Annual Lisa's Run will be held at Wapahani High School on Saturday morning. Proceeds from race support annual scholarship in the name of Lisa Gibson Schmidt. Lisa lost her battle with cancer in November of 2001.

The 2nd great race of the weekend is the kickoff to 2012 Triathlon / Duathlon season for Muncie Multisport at Prarie Creek Reservoir. Featuring races / distances to fit almost anyone, this will be a great start to the season.

April 30

Unfortunately our friend, John Vetter, was hit riding his bike to work at Accutech this morning. The driver pulled out and said he just didn't see him. Fortunately John is reported to be OK.

As we are all out on the roads this week enjoying the warm weather running and cycling, please be alert to your surroundings. This includes keeping a eye on motorists, dogs and other runners / riders.

I am known sometimes for wearing bright yellow jackets or shirts while running/riding. Putting aside the fact that I like yellow (I have owned a bright yellow Jeep in the past), wearing high visibility clothes can help us be seen by motorists. I also try to always wear my road ID bracelet.

The truth is no matter what we do or what precautions we take, sometimes things happen. Case in point, as I rode around the the reservoir last week I was hit with what I thought was a piece of hail. It hit my right arm just below my jersey sleeve. I noticed that it looked oblong when it flew off my arm and down to the pavement. Although it did break the skin and bleed, I did not stop...I was after all on a hard lap and was aiming towards a specific average speed for the lap (for those that have known us, this would be me aspiring to be like my father, Big Jerry).

In any case I finished the lap in a rain storm. On the way back home, I cruised by the spot where I got hit. To my amazement I found that I did not get him buy a hail stone.....it was a tent stake.

Tent stake

So I see three possibilities here:

#1 - I somehow ran over this and flipped it up from my wheel..not likely. The fact that it hit my arm hard enough to break the skin rules this out I believe.

#2 - It was thrown from a mower..Once again not likely, I don't remember seeing anyone mowing at the time.

#3 - It was fired from a slingshot towards me by a unknown person..I don't remember seeing anyone around at the time....

#4 - It fell from the sky...there was a approaching storm...Maybe this could of happened..it almost sounds a little X File'ish to me (that is OK - we are big XFiles fans). Also running with the XFiles theme, this is the same location that one of our best friends thought he saw a spaceman running......but that is another story.

I will probably never know exactly how this tent stake hit me. I am very thankful that it did not hit my face or one of my wheels.

So remember to stay visible by wearing bright clothing and watch out for those falling tent stakes.

April 27

The Greenway 6K starts at 8 a.m. tomorrow (4/28). Location: Wysor street depot. This will be the sixth year for Cardinal Greenway hosting races. The 6K length will be a interesting distance, a little longer then they typical 5K, but not quite a 4 or 5 miler...Hopefully the weather will hold off.

March 11

Did you set you clock forward today or did you get up a hour late? Although we sometimes grumble about the time change, the extra hours of sunlight at night are a great bonus for our running and riding after work.

Next Saturday, March 17, brings us the Shamrock run. The run benefits the Delaware County Emergency Management Agency.

Feb. 29

Happy Leap year day! Can it ready be 67 degrees today! Too nice to be inside - get out and run and ride! I know we will be this afternoon.

As March is just a day away - we are getting closer to the Shamrock 5k on 3/17. Details / Link on the calendar

Feb. 3

The racing year starts to kick off with the Groundhog 7 on Feb. 12 at Zionsville High School. Traditionally this race is on Superbowl Sunday, but with the big game in town, it was moved to the Sunday after the Superbowl. Last year's race was cancelled due to snow and ice. Lets hope the nice weather we have been having, holds out for this race.

We lost a friend of ours on Wednesday night, Tom Fisk. A avid cyclist, Tom loved riding on the Cardinal Greenway. We are sure he is riding now on the great greenway in the sky with the wind at his back and the temperatures at a perfect 72 degrees. We offer Emily, Wolfie, Scoobie and the entire Fisk family our condolences.

Jan. 9

Sad news today, it has been passed to us that Tom Devine passed away this morning (1/9/11).

Tom was a very important part of Delta Cross Country and Track over the years.

He was also a master teacher and mentor to staff and students.

Please remember his family in your prayers.

July 22

Today, July 22nd, we had the opportunity to stop by and visit with Jim Leffler. Now about 5 weeks after his surgery in June, Jim looks to be doing well. He reports he is up to 30 minutes walks and doing some "stairs" in the afternoon (indoors). He says is looking forward to the heat and humidity to finally break.

Jim still has a good amount of weight to gain, as you can see in this picture he is even skinnier then "Big Jerry" and that is really saying something.

It was great to see Jim today and more importantly to see that he was doing well. Perhaps on the next visit we will get a picture of him walking or doing the "stairs".

Great weather (well a little humid) greeted athletes on today's Muncie Endurathon. We are happy to report that "Brews Crew" won the Long Course Triathlon Team division. Brew's Crew team members were Michael Stocker, Adam Voss and Jeff Frame. Congratulations to all Endurathon participants. See our calendar page for complete listing of results.

With the Muncie Endurathon scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday July 10th, we encourage those not participating to go out and support the athletes. We typically look forward to seeing the locals including the Hitchocks, Ogden and Leffler among many locals who have stepped up to this challenge in the past.

This year will be different. Many of our thoughts will be about the Lefflers and Jim's fight with cancer. Look for the "Brew Crew" Tri team - cheer them on. Jim may not be there to hear the cheers - but somehow I think they will reach him while he is resting and recovering at home. Go "Brew Crew".

Support Jim Leffler -

As many of you may know, Jim Leffler is fighting cancer. Our prayers and thoughts go out to Jim and his family. We have many fond memories of running with Jim or "Brew" that you may know him by. To the Pierces - he is always just "Jim". The Lefflers have a website setup to communicate his fight with cancer. We encourage you to visit his site and share your thoughts and support.
